For those of us accustomed to classic European gardens this is an amazing contrast. There are neither soft leafy bushes nor colourful display beds of annuals but strikingly shaped cacti, succulents and other desert plants set against an arid and angular backdrop.

The Desert Discovery Trail is the main trail, and features plants from around the world; this leads to four other trails and all the exhibits.

Each of the four sub-trails offers a different perspective on the desert.

Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Trail - winds through 5 habitats that have provided people with useful for food, fibre, medicine and cultural purposes.

Sonoran Desert Nature Loop Trail - focuses on plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert and features stunning views across to the distant hills. Experience majestic organ pipe cactus and find out if the cholla cactus really jumps. - Trail closes at sunset.

Centre for Desert Living Trail - this trail showcases ideas and strategies that demonstrate efficient, useful, sustainable and harmonious ways to work with nature in the desert environment.

Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Loop Trail - is planted with nearly two acres of North American wild flowers. Although there are flowers in bloom all year the best time to see these is during spring in March and April.

When visiting it is important to remember to bring water, hat and sunscreen as it can get very hot. The sub trails are not surfaced so it is worth wearing comfy shoes.

These gardens will change your perspective on desert flora.
