The Caerhays Estate is sublimely located in a protected valley above Porthluney Cove on the Cornish south coast and the fabulous spring gardens have been built on the slopes behind the castle.
The large and varied collection of alpine and cool climate plants is a combination brought from China during the early 20th century and modern hybrids, many created here including the world famous xWilliamsii Camellias.
Park your car in the car park at the picturesque Porthluney Cove and walk through the gatehouse and up the main drive. It is not until you are halfway that the magnificent castle comes into view and you are teased with splashes of colour from the gardens behind.
The gardens have an informal, magical woodland feel. All plants are well labelled and the well kept paths wind their way up the hillside slopes, occasionally revealing stunning countryside and coastal views through the trees.
There are over 450 Magnolia plants here which vary in size, colour and flowering time so no matter when you visit, you'll see some in bloom. The flower colours vary from whites and yellows to all shades of pink, the bare branches allowing visitors to really appreciate their magnificent blooms.
The gardens also world famous for the camellia collection, with colours ranging from gorgeous pale yellows and pinks to vibrant reds, these along with an impressive collection of rhododendron line the paths and offer a stunning spectacle of colour.
Between the shrubs and under the trees the ground is speckled with primroses and narcissus varieties providing colour wherever you look.
The well signposted walks will take you a good few hours to navigate completely, when a visit to the extremely picturesque garden cafe, set in the courtyard of the house, will be most welcome.
