Thermo-King 600 litre Composter

By: Bob Saunders

Thermo-King composters are made by GARANTIA of Germany and have earned a well deserved reputation world-wide for quality and durability.

There is a range of sizes available but the most popular by far is the 600 litre capacity composter as it tends to suit most average size gardens with a family generating average amounts of kitchen waste.

N.B. if you have a compact garden and small family then a worm farm is probably better.

Composting is a complex procedure and to do it efficiently you need:-

  • a good mix of green and brown contents,
  • regular moisture added,
  • good airflow
  • and most importantly good heat retention.

Materials:

The walls of Thermo King composters are made of Thermolen®, a recycled and foamed polypropylene material, which offers outstanding insulation.   This highly durable and UV stable material provides the ultimate in thermal insulating and is the best choice for composter walls.  It also has plenty of breather holes - not always found in other composters.

Assembly:

Thermo King composters are easy to assemble without tools, thank to the the Easy-Lock assembly system which as you'll see in the video clip, is just delightfully simple (generally the element behind all good ideas).  All in all it takes less than 10 minutes to assemble.

Access:

The two large, hinged access panels make it easy to get to the composted contents and the hinged lids can be used individually or both just lifted off for maximum access.  There are wind clips on both sides too to keep all in place on windy sites.

We found it a breeze to put together and then subsequently it has delivered regular supplies of well composted, rich output.

A very minor niggle is that the lid can be a touch awkward to settle the flange into the target aperture - but if you don't remove the whole double lid then its not going to be a problem anyway.
